Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
